2D Animation Setting Model

I did a quick layout model of the setting for the 2D animation in maya.

AnimationBasementlayoutNew

I fixed up the layout for the animation so it was slightly more accurate and smaller (to recreate a basement size).

I took some screenshots of the main points in the animation. I’m not great at perspective so this helps and is way faster for me.

I used those screenshots/stills to sketch the background and make more detailed storyboards. (I purposefully didn’t do the running board cause that will be easy to animate)

2D Animation Planning

This week I did some drawings for the 2D animation and I intend to make some improved (more detailed) drawings of the story board next week and an animatic to go along with it.

ShortNotes

In the above image I made a bunch of notes during the Tuesday lecture of the main objects involved in the animation (Such as the height of the Shelf, broken chair, ball and character, as well as other things to remember while animating)

AnimationBasementlayout

I then did a really really quick sketch of the potential layout for the animation. I may shrink this/do a 3D model in Maya or Unreal Engine so I can draw it easier when I animate because Im not very good at perspective at the moment.

Here are the boards I worked on quickly during lesson.
1. Lizard walks to the shelf with the Globe ball
2. The camera pans up to show only one empty shelf space.
3. Lizard looks over to the corner of the screen then –
4. It shows he’s looking at a broken step ladder, which is as tall as the 2nd shelf.
5 – 7. Between these panels, the lizard throws the ball up to the shelf and it doesn’t fit, so it falls back down.
8. He attempts again but it fails the same way.
9 – 10. Lizard walks back slowly, then runs forward.
11. He then jumps up and slam dunks the ball into the shelf.
12. The shelf breaks as Lizard walks away because the ball doesn’t fit.

2D Animation Pitch

Also, on Friday, we had to pitch our idea for our 10 Overcoming Obstacles animation. My idea is of a Lizard character in an Arctic Observatory (or research centre), he’s in the storage room attempting to put a ball on a shelf but fails to, and eventually the shelf falls on him. I might revise this idea again, but the pitch went well and I’m happy with the character. The powerpoint below contains the pitch 🙂

Head turn (cleaned)

MercedesTurn2

I redid/refined the animation of my character Mercedes and added the rest of her features from my story, I want to colour it later on.
The main things I noticed with the initial animation was the proportions of the draw were slightly off at the start before she turns her head, and under head chin looked weird, I did as best as I could

Gem Character Animation

Before I went to Monday’s self study session I had an idea to animate my pre-arrival character fighting with a ‘Gemsona’ I made a while ago, but I had yet to animate the character so I practised in TVPaint on Monday.

Here are the references I made when I created her. I used this to do the animations…

gemocaction1

Because I haven’t drawn her in a while I did a sketch animation to get used to it. Drawing her over and over again eventually helped me to define the features further into it.

gemocaction2

I added the face on a separate layer so that I didn’t get too confused, previously (not including the lemon animation) I would animate the face along with the action, but animating took me longer and if I wasn’t happy with the expression I had to keep changing it. Doing it this way was helpful as I knew exactly how I wanted the expressions to change.

And finally I did a ‘clean up’, making sure all the clothing details were drawn onto the animation and the hair was OK etc.
So some self criticism… I like how the animation turned out and I managed to keep the majority of the proportions the same throughout, and made sure to give it as much motion as possible. I also am happy with the bounciness of the hair, and my use of smear frames for when she falls to the ground, throws the nun-chucks and bends her legs towards the end.
I’m not overly impressed with (but don’t dislike either) how slowly she puts her foot down when stepping back, and it might not be a big issue, but her hoodie shrinks at the bottom when she pulls the nunchucks out her Gem (back) and I think this is partly because I was also referencing it more towards the end of the animation.

Hope you like it 🙂

3D Animation Trial – Dancing Animation Process continued

Dance1Layer3

So this was a gift in a sense for a streamer I like to watch of her ‘Lemon Boi’ character. I sketched the head of the character over the guideline and made sure the leaf on his head bounced correctly.

Dance1Layer4

Then after that I drew some clean lines over the character!

Dance1Layer5

I was originally going to leave it like this (with the Lemons) but everything looked super stiff/ the background didn’t look right…

Dance1Layer6

… so I decided to animate the background as well!

Dance1Layer7

And just so it didn’t look incredibly basic, I added some particle animations too!

Dance1Final

Here’s the final animation 🙂 I also added some music to it (after slowing it down, link takes you to a tweet).

DinoEggPickup

And this Friday I worked on a 3D animation using the Dinosaur rig since I wasn’t able to make it to Seminar. I’m getting used to 3D animation and its actually more enjoyable now.

Also did these walking tests in TVPaint using the stamp.
